The origin of Luttenberg

Luttenberg, a picturesque village in the municipality of Raalte, Overijssel, has a rich and interesting history dating back to the Middle Ages. The name “Luttenberg” is possibly derived from the word “lotten,” meaning “lonely place,” and “mountain,” referring to the hilly surroundings.

Early History
Archaeological finds suggest that the area around Luttenberg was already inhabited long before our era. In the fourteenth century, a manor house called Luttenberg was first mentioned. This manor house was a fortified house that served as a residence for the nobility and played an important role in the local community.

Development into a Village
The construction of a church in 1834 marked an important turning point in the development of Luttenberg. This church, dedicated to Saint Cornelius, became the central point of the village and contributed to the growth and cohesion of the community. More and more houses and facilities were built around the church, which led to the formation of the current village.

Economic and Social Development
Over the years, Luttenberg developed further, with a focus on agriculture and livestock farming. The area around the village is mainly focused on dairy farming, which is still an important economic activity. In addition, various recreational facilities have been created, such as campsites and bungalow parks, which contribute to tourism in the region.

Cultural Attractions
Luttenberg also has some remarkable cultural attractions. One of them is the Lourdes Grotto, built in 1915 by the villagers on the occasion of the jubilee of the local priest. This grotto is a copy of the famous Marian Grotto in Lourdes and is now a national monument. Other attractions include the Dijkman Clog Workshop, where traditional clogs are made, and the Sallands Agricultural Museum De Laarman, which highlights the agricultural history of the region.

Modern Times
Today, Luttenberg is a lively village with approximately 2,250 inhabitants. The village is known for its active community, with numerous sports and cultural associations. The Elckerlyc Community Centre plays a central role in the social life of the village, and events such as the annual Luttenbergs Feest attract many visitors.

With its rich history, beautiful nature and close-knit community, Luttenberg remains a special place in the heart of Overijssel.
